New Research Links Lifestyle Choices to Reduced Alzheimer's Risk
A landmark study published in July 2026 in the journal Neurology has added powerful new evidence to a growing body of research: the choices we make every day may significantly shape our risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at the Rush University Medical Center followed more than 10,000 adults over a decade and found that those who consistently practiced five key lifestyle habits reduced their risk of Alzheimer's by up to 35 percent.
The five habits identified were regular aerobic exercise (at least 150 minutes per week), adherence to a Mediterranean-style or MIND diet, quality sleep of seven to eight hours per night, limited alcohol consumption, and not smoking. Participants who maintained all five habits showed the most dramatic reductions in risk, while even adopting two or three produced measurable benefits.
"What's exciting about this research is that it confirms lifestyle is not a minor factor — it is a major one," said lead researcher Dr. Klodian Dhana. "These are modifiable behaviors. People have real agency here." The study controlled for genetic risk factors including the APOE-e4 gene variant, which is the strongest known genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's.
Exercise emerged as the single most impactful factor. Participants who exercised regularly showed reduced levels of amyloid plaques and tau tangles — the two hallmark proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease — compared to sedentary participants. Aerobic activity appears to stimulate the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports the survival of existing neurons and encourages the growth of new ones.
Diet was the second most significant factor. The Mediterranean diet — rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, fish, and olive oil — has long been associated with cardiovascular health. This study reinforces its neuroprotective properties. Participants who closely followed the MIND diet variant, which specifically emphasizes leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fish while limiting red meat and sweets, showed the strongest cognitive benefits.
Sleep quality, often overlooked in Alzheimer's prevention discussions, proved to be a critical third pillar. During deep sleep, the glymphatic system — the brain's waste-clearance mechanism — flushes out toxic proteins including amyloid-beta. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts this process, allowing harmful proteins to accumulate over time. Participants who consistently slept fewer than six hours per night showed significantly higher rates of cognitive decline.
For caregivers and families, this research carries a hopeful message: it is never too late to start. The study found meaningful risk reduction even among participants who adopted healthier habits in their 60s and 70s. Small, consistent changes — a daily walk, more leafy greens, a consistent bedtime — compound over time into meaningful protection for the brain.
